The Haptor Residence, 1987, Buff and Hensman, FAIA. Author P. D. James writes: "Privacy is the last luxury;" and with its gated, long private drive to a secluded hillside setting, the Haptor Residence has privacy in spades. With its cubic forms and careful planning of exterior and interior "rooms," the residence affords the additional luxuries of space and sweeping views. There is a pervasive sense of openness and soft natural light, particularly in the double-height living room. Directly bordering protected Santa Monica Conservancy land, here one inhabits a private world. While grand, the residence is still grounded in nature and consciously designed to allow for quiet thinking and meditation. All is set within a Japanese garden by noted landscape designer Howard Oshiyama who, as a Zen Buddhist, endowed the site with its own spirit which is palpable.See the Virtual Tour for a comprehensive video of the setting, views and environment, including drone footage.
