Before coming to Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff, she was an active community member in Fairfield of DARE, President of the Home & School Association, and a member of the West Essex Fairfield FSC Soccer Organization. Currently, she is a professor in the Communication Media Studies Department at Montclair State University where she earned her BA. Additionally, she holds a Masters degree form New York University.
In 1996 and 2004, Sylvia was awarded OUTSTANDING SPEECH & THEATRE TEACHER of SECONDARY EDUCATION in NJ, awarded by Governor Kean and Governor McGreevey, respectively. In 1998, she was featured on WOR-TV Channel 9 with Governor Whitman in A SALUTE TO GREAT TEACHERS. She is past President and present Executive Committee member of THE SPEECH & THEATRE ASSOCIATION of NJ which promotes the arts in the state.
